Not only is the Beagle an excellent hunting dog and loyal companion, it is also happy-go-lucky, funny, and’thanks to its pleading expression’cute. They were bred to hunt in packs, so they enjoy company and are generally easygoing.

The first use of the word Beagle is found in 1475. The origin of the word is uncertain, but it may be derived the old French “be’geule”, meaning “gape throat” in reference to the baying voice of the hounds.

The American Kennel Club recognises two separate varieties of Beagle: the 13-inch for hounds less than 13 inches (33 cm), and the 15-inch for those between 13 and 15 inches (33 and 38 cm). The Canadian Kennel Club recognises a single type, with a height not exceeding 15 inches (38 cm).

Beagles are generally considered to be a fairly smart dog breed. However, they can be pretty difficult to train and may appear very stubborn. Famed psychologist Dr. Stanley Coren ranked beagles at 131 when compared to hundreds of other dog breeds in terms of intelligence.3 Sept 2024

However, like all breeds, Beagles can be prone to certain health issues. Beagles are known for their love of food and can be prone to obesity if they are overfed or not given enough exercise. Obesity can lead to a range of health problems, including diabetes, heart disease, joint problems, and respiratory issues.24 Sept 2024

Beagles have a highly developed sense of smell, with around 220 million scent receptors. This makes them excellent at tracking, often used for tasks like finding missing people or detecting contraband. Bred for hunting rabbits and hares, Beagles are determined, agile, and skilled hunters.22 Sept 2024

The average life expectancy for a Beagle is 12 to 15 years. As a healthy, active, and fairly small breed, the Beagle’s lifespan is longer than many larger dogs. But it does mean owners are required to keep up with their exercise and nutritional needs to ensure they are happy and healthy, and live as long as possible.4 Mar 2023
